Biblical Use of the Shofar

IN THE OLD TESTAMENT THE SHOFAR WAS USED TO:

1,          Gather God's people at Mt. Sinai — Exodus 19:13-17

The blast of the Shofar, known as the Trump of God. This sound caused great fear and reverence when God came down upon Mt. Sinai to establish His covenant.

The sound of the Shofar calls us close to Yeshua and reminds us of the Renewed Covenant that He has established. We can come to Him in reverence and Godly fear.

2.         Proclaim Libe in the Year of Jubilee     Leviticus 25:9 10

The sound of the Shofar announced at the close of the great day of atonement, after the evening sacrifice, the year which restored freedom and the blessings of covenant.

The sound reminds us of the liberty that we have in Yeshua. He has established the covenant with us and we receive liberty as we receive total forgiveness of our debt of sin. We now become heirs of the blessings of His covenant.

3.      Break Down the Walls and Bring Defeat of our Enemies  Joshua 6:2-5, 20

When the Shofars were blown and the people shouted, walls came down and enemies were defeated.

We can blow the Shofar, shout for victory and every wall that the enemy has built will come crumbling down, and our enemies will be defeated.

4.          Celebrate the Ark of the Covenant       Il Samuel 6:15

David and all Israel brought up the Ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the Trumpet.

The Ark of the Covenant represented the presence of God and always brought the blessings of the Covenant to God's people, When the Shofar is blown, we can rejoice, shout and celebrate, just like David did for the presence of God has been established in us, and we are recipients of the blessing established in Yeshua.

5.      Rally the People for War — Jeremiah 4:5; 6:1 and I Samuel 13:3-4

Saul blew the Shofar throughout all the land proclaiming liberty from the oppression of the Philistines, and rallying the people together to fight. The first blast was blown and a signal fire was lit. A second blast was blown along with a signal fire to send the proclamation quickly throughout the whole country.

pg. 2

The sound of the Shofar calls us to rally together to break the oppression brought upon us. We must fight and secure our liberty that has already been given to us in Yeshua. We must fight and secure our liberty that has already been given to us in Yeshua. We must allow the all-consuming fire to ignite our lives and draw people together to serve God.

6.           Overcome the Enemy — Judges 7:19-21

When Gideon and his men blew the Shofar, they were declaring the defeat of their enemies,

When the Shofar is blown, we declare defeat over every enemy. We declare that our victory has been secured through Yeshua.

Stop Fiqhting Among Brethren - Il Samuel 2:26-29

Joab used the sound of the Shofar to stop from fighting among each other.

When the Shofar is blown, it will stop division among the brethren and call the people to stop fighting and come together in unity.

8.             Warninq of Judgment for Sin Ezekiel 33:3-6

The sound of the Shofar was used to warn the people to repent and turn to God to stop judgment from coming on the people because of their iniquity.

When the Shofar is blown, it is a reminder that we must turn away from our sin and turn to God, because through Yeshua, He has delivered us from the wrath to come.

9.       Warninq of the Coming Day of the Lord   Joel

The Trumpet of God will sound as a warning of the coming day of judgment.

When the Shofar is blown, we know that Yeshua is coming soon and this world will be judged.

10.      Announce the Establishment of a Kinq - I Kings 1:34: Il Kings 11:12: Il Kings 11:14

Blowing of the Shofar recognizes the authority of the King as established by God.  When the Shofar is blown, it establishes Yeshua as the King of Kings, and acknowledges His authority over our lives.

11.         Declare a New Beginning — Numbers 10:10: Psalms 81:3

When the Shofar is blown it is a reminder to us that when we begin anything, or offer anything to God, that we must do it with Thanksgiving.

Everyday Yeshua gives us a new beginning, so let us begin it with thanksgiving.

12.         Accompany the Song of the Lord — Il Chronicles 29:26-29

Shofar was blown as an act of worship while the Levites were operating in their ministry before the Lord.

When the Shofar is blown, we can enter into worship as we present ourselves as a living sacrifice to God through Yeshua.
